Become a Live-In-Carer

What is a Live-in-Carer?

A Live-in Carer provides dedicated, one-to-one support to someone in their own home, helping them maintain their independence, routines, and quality of life.

You’ll live in the person’s home and become a trusted part of their everyday life. Your role may include supporting with personal care, preparing meals, helping around the home, supporting appointments and activities, and providing companionship and reassurance.

Just as importantly, you’ll encourage the person to remain involved in their own routines and decisions, supporting them to do as much as they can for themselves.

Live-In Care Opportunities

Live-in care is about being there when support is needed, while helping someone continue to live life on their own terms. Make a difference where it matters most.

Understanding the Service

What is Live-In Care?

Live-in care means providing dedicated, one-to-one care and support to a person in their own home, allowing them to remain in familiar surroundings rather than moving into residential care.

As a Live-In Carer, you will live in the client’s home and provide support according to their individual needs and care plan. Every placement is different, and your role will be shaped around the person’s routines, preferences, and way of life.

The role is about being there when support is needed while encouraging the person to remain as independent as possible — supporting them with everyday tasks, personal care and activities while respecting their choices, privacy, dignity, and independence.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

What does a Live-In-Carer Do?

Providing compassionate, one-to-one support tailored to each person's lifestyle and care plan.

🤝

Personal care

💊

Medication support

Where trained and authorised, support people with medication safely and strictly in line with their care plan.

☕

Daily routines

Help with everyday activities that enable someone to remain comfortable, supported, and independent at home.

🍲

Meal preparation

Prepare fresh meals and drinks according to the person's preferences, dietary requirements, and care plan.

🚶

Mobility and independence

Provide appropriate support with mobility and everyday activities, encouraging people to do as much as they can for themselves.

❤️

Companionship and social support

Build positive professional relationships and support people to remain connected with the people, places and activities that matter to them.

🚗

Community support

Where included in the support plan, accompany people to appointments, activities, shopping, or other community outings.

Routine & Flow

What could a typical day look like?

There is no single typical day in live-in care. Every person you support has their own routines, preferences, and way of living.

Your day might include helping someone get ready in the morning, preparing breakfast, supporting personal care, completing light household tasks, preparing meals, accompanying them to an appointment or activity, or simply spending time together.

You may also have periods when the person is resting or enjoying their own time. Live-in care is not about taking over someone's life — it is about providing support when it is needed while encouraging independence, choice, and control.

Your responsibilities, working arrangements and daily routine will always be agreed around the individual's needs and care plan.

Client Focus

Who will you support?

Prime Years Care Agency supports adults who may need care and support associated with:

  • ♿ Physical disabilities
  • 👁️ Sensory impairment
  • 🧠 Dementia
  • 🏥 After Hospital Discharge
  • 👵 Care of the Elderly

The exact support you provide will depend on the individual's needs, care plan, your role, and the training you have completed.

Placement Structure

Working patterns in Live-In Care

Live-in care provides 24-hour support, seven days a week, allowing the person you support to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their own home.

As a Live-In Carer, you stay in the client's home for an agreed placement period (typically 2 to 3 weeks on placement, followed by scheduled rest periods) and become a consistent, trusted presence in their everyday life. Your role is to provide support throughout the day while also respecting the person's privacy, routines, independence, and personal space.

Live-In FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A care plan sets out the individual needs, preferences, routines, and support requirements of the person you will be caring for. It gives you clear guidance about the support they need and how that support should be provided. You will have access to relevant care information before and throughout your placement.

Yes. Before a live-in placement begins, we assess the person's care needs and the environment in which the care will be provided. This helps us identify potential risks and put appropriate measures in place to support the safety, wellbeing, and independence of both the client and the carer.

Yes. Although live-in care involves working independently within the client's home, you are never expected to manage everything alone. You will have a dedicated member of the Prime Years team available for advice, guidance, or support throughout your placement, plus 24/7 on-call support.

Not necessarily. A driving licence may be beneficial for some placements, particularly where the person you support enjoys getting out into the community or has access to a vehicle. However, driving is not automatically a requirement for every live-in placement. Where driving is required, this will be discussed with you before you accept the placement.

No. You will be employed directly by Prime Years Care Agency, not by the person you support. This means Prime Years remains fully responsible for your employment arrangements, statutory holiday pay, pension, training, supervision, and ongoing support.

Live-in placements are arranged around predictable patterns. Depending on the client's needs and your preferences, you may stay with a client for two or three weeks at a time, followed by an agreed period of time away from the placement. The exact arrangement, rest periods, and time off will be clearly agreed before you accept.
