Companionship Care Jobs

Help Someone Feel Less Alone

Support older people to stay connected to their community, interests, and everyday life. A truly rewarding role where genuine human connection comes first.

Become a Companionship Carer

What is a Companionship Carer?

A companionship carer provides friendly, reliable support that helps someone stay connected, engaged, and confident in their everyday life.

You might spend time having a conversation over a cup of tea, accompany someone on a walk, help with shopping, attend an appointment together, play a favourite game, or simply provide company when someone would otherwise be alone.

"The role is about the person, not just the task."

You’ll get to know the individual you support, understand what matters to them and help them maintain their routines, interests, and connections. Sometimes, having someone there can make all the difference.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

What does a Companionship Carer do?

Every day brings variety and the opportunity to make a real difference through meaningful companionship.

Spend meaningful time with someone, listen to their stories, and provide friendly conversation, warmth, and reassurance.

🚢

Getting Out & About

Support someone to get out into the community, whether that's a walk, shopping trip, coffee, appointment, or favourite local place.

πŸ›’

Shopping & Everyday Errands

🎨

Hobbies & Interests

Encourage people to continue doing the things they enjoy, from hobbies and games to reading, gardening, or watching a favourite programme together.

🏑

Light Household Support

Help with simple everyday tasks that are part of maintaining a comfortable, tidy home, where this forms part of the agreed companionship service.

❀️

Emotional & Social Support

Provide a friendly presence, helping reduce loneliness and supporting someone's emotional wellbeing through genuine human connection.

Understanding the Roles

What is the difference between Companionship Care and Personal Care Home Visits?

Connection & Lifestyle

Companionship Care

Companionship care is primarily about connection, conversation, independence, and everyday life.

  • βœ“ Spend time talking and socialising.
  • βœ“ Accompany someone on outings or to appointments.
  • βœ“ Help with shopping and errands.
  • βœ“ Support hobbies, games and personal interests.
  • βœ“ Provide reassurance and emotional support.
  • βœ“ Help with light household tasks.
  • βœ“ Encourage social connection and independence.
ℹ️ Note: Companionship Care does not involve personal care such as washing, dressing, toileting, or other intimate care tasks.
Personal Care & Clinical

Personal Care Home Visits

Personal care involves supporting someone with their personal care needs, where this forms part of their agreed care plan.

  • β€’ Washing and bathing assistance.
  • β€’ Dressing and undressing.
  • β€’ Toileting and continence support.
  • β€’ Personal hygiene support.
  • β€’ Mobility and transfer support.
  • β€’ Medication support (where appropriately trained & authorised).
  • β€’ Other personal care tasks in the care plan.
πŸ›‘οΈ Carried out under regulated domiciliary care protocols with dedicated clinical oversight.

The Simple Difference

Companionship care helps you stay connected to life.
Personal care helps you stay safe and supported with your personal care needs.

At Prime Years, both are centred around the same principle: supporting the person, not just the care task.

Day in the Life

What could a typical Companionship visit look like?

There is no single typical visit.

Every person is different, and that’s what makes companionship care so rewarding. One visit might involve sitting together over a cup of tea and having a conversation. Another might mean accompanying someone to the shops, getting some fresh air, attending an appointment, or spending time doing something they enjoy.

For some people, companionship can even mean having the confidence to enjoy a holiday or day trip, knowing they have someone there to share the experience and provide support along the way.

"It’s not about filling someone’s time. It’s about making their time matter."

You might simply be the person who brings a little conversation and connection into someone’s day.
